I HAVE A 2002 FORD TAURUS. I DROVE THE CAR OUT OF TOWN AND IT DROVE GREAT. USED THE CRUISE CONROL TO MAKE SURE I DIDN'T SPEED. PARKED IT HOME OR A WHILE THEN ATTEMPTED TO GO TO THE STORE BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T MOVE AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS WHINNING LOUD. I CHECKED THE FLUID AND IT WAS FINE...A LITTLE BROWN BUT FLUID LEVELS WERE GOOD. A DAY LATER, I TRIED MOVONG IT AGAIN AND THE SAME RESULTS....NOT MOVING. DO I NEED A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE OR A NEW TRANNY???!!!

If it has a loud whinning sound, it may well be the pump drive shaft. It couples to the torque converter and sometimes the splines in the torque converter strip out. So I guess, technically, it's the torque converter. If this is indeed the problem (which couldn't be completely proved without removing the trans) the torque converter and the pump shaft will have to be replaced. Also flush out the trans fluid and change the filter since it is likely that tiny shards of metal are suspended in the fluid. You shouldn't need a new trany if this is the failure. If you have any more questions, just give me a shout.
