I have a 98 Ford Taurus with dual overhead. The o2 sensors have needed replacement for several years now. I use a different car for work, so have not driven this car for those several years, except once a year or so to move it. I know, I'm bad. As I finally have enough money to buy all 4 of the o2 sensors to change, I tried to start the car, and found a completely dead battery. I changed the battery, and now it wont start. It cranks, but will not turn over. I haven't moved it for 2 years now, but last time I started it was probably a little over a year ago. At that time, it did start, but did have the noises associated with the bad o2 sensors. Someone told me the gas is probably bad. Before I drain the tank and refill it, are there any other things I can check? For the record, I know little about cars, but will do/research any repairs I can possibly do myself.

Hello,

In order for the engine to start you will need to have spark, fuel and compression.
Since this vehicle have been siting for a long period of time it could be number of reasons why its not starting.

First check to see if you are getting fuel. Can you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn the key to the on position?
If the fuel pump comes on then you will have to make sure the fuel it getting to the engine. If there is a clog in the line it can restrict the fuel flow. So you will need to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. This can be done using a fuel pressure test gauge. Which you can rent from your local auto parts store.
This vehicle should have 37-45 PSI of fuel pressure with the key on and engine off.

Here is a helpful video of how to check fuel pressure:

If there is not adequate pressure or no pressure at all then it could be due a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pressure regulator.
First check the fuel filter. The fuel filter is located at the right hand side rear frame rail adjacent to the front corner of the fuel tank (see diagram).

If pressure is good then you will need to check for spark at the spark plugs.
Which can be done as simple as pulling out one of the plugs and cranking the engine.

I have attached diagrams for your reference.

Thank you.
