Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
False air leakage.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.

Engine Performance problem
1993 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I was driving down the highway doing about 55 when suddenly my car started losing power. Even when I put my foot down on the gas the speedometer was steadily dropping to zero. When I pulled over and tried to restart the car the car wouldn't move. I am at a lost of what to do about this situation.

Every time I start my car, it seems as though it wants to jump out of the gate. I have a 92 Ford Taurus Wagon GL, with a 3.0 V6. I have gotten so used to turning on the vent (A/C control) to "calm" it down. I am still novice on idle and throttle issues. Car idles at approx. 15 mph, and cruises at 30 without pushing the accelerator. Anything I can do to reset this?

You need to check the idle air control valve by removing it (Get a Haynes manual for details)
Look for excessive carbon build-up. If so, they can't be cleaned - you have to replace it.

Also, check the Mass airflow sensor by tapping on it with a screwdriver handle. If the car acts up, then it could be bad.

Check the throttle position sensor, although this is a long shot. Measure the voltage between two adjacent wires (key on, engine off). Open and close the throttle slowly. The voltage should go from 0 to about 5 volts, smoothly. If it doesn't go the full range, then it is bad.

To whom it may concern, I recently purchased a 1991 (4) door Sedan Ford Taurus, the car ran pretty good up until I filled the tank with Grade 87, as soon as I began to drive after this fill up my car was shaking and anytime I pressed the Gas pedal there would be a delayed in acceleration to retify this problem I ease up pressure on the gas pedal and then lightly touch the gas pedal in order to resume a normal speed/acceleration. This has been an ongoing issue for about a week. Any solutions, answers or suggestions?

Thanks for your time.

One possibility is fuel starvation. Check fuel pressure under load. If the flow is not up to spec, it will make the car slow to accelerate, and cause it to bog down under load.

Another possibility is the TP sensor. This sensor can cause hesitations as you describe. Have the system checked for codes.

Also on the list is the MAP sensor. This is the main sensor that controls the fuel/air mixture. Pay particular attention to the vacuum line leading from the manifold to the sensor. When this sensor fails, many times it will NOT generate a trouble code.

At least I have given you a few things to investigate. Hope this helps.

Check the catalytic converter to see if it is blocked or plugged. Check for vacuum leaks. IF the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned to identify the trouble codes.

My car died while driving. Starts back up but chugs slowly and when u step on the gas pedal the car won't rev up and acts like its not getting gas. We have checked everything from fuel pump to compression to pressure and still don't know what the problem is

Could be many things.

Start with the basics.

Fuel pressure should be 37 to 43 psi with the engine running.

Compression test is also in order. If compression is low, it would indicate a valve timing problem like a timing chain (or if it is an SHO, a timing belt problem).

Ignition timing is also a possibility. If it is a 3.0 or 3.8 engine, check the distributor drive gear.

These are a few things to check. There are more! Give me a bit more information about engine size and type, and I can offer more information.
