Based on the car's shudders while slowly accelerating or attempting to hold speeds around 35 to 50 mph I suspect these ancient O2 sensors are toast. While I haven't had them tested all of my car hobbiest coworkers suggest I may wish to replace such old sensors outright and save the testing bill. I would like a walk-through of O2 sensor replacement with diagrams, if possible. I don't have a Chilton's manual for the car. Or, if it's a pro level job, please let me know! Thanks for your time!

Hi:
The O2 sensors are located on the exhaust system at and before the catalytic converter. Basically, disconnect the wiring to them and they unbolt. I will warn you that they may be really hard to get out. If you replace them, us antiseze on the threads of the new ones so you can easily remove them in the future.

Finally, O2 sensors can be expensive and when bad, will usually set the check engine light. If the check engine light isn't on, I question if that is the problem. If it is on, have a nationally recognized parts store scan the computer for you. Most do it for free, and it could save you a headach and money.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Joe

Thanks, Joe. Yup, the engine light is on and it's shuddering away at 35+ mph. I'm shuddering, too, at the thought of how bad my fuel economy is right now!

To make sure the sensor is bad, have the computer scanned. If the light is on, there will be a code. Most nationally recognized parts stores will do it for free.

Let me know what you find.
