It could be for any one of a dozen reasons bad rings scored cylinder walls bad head gasket leaky valves ETC. you should be able to figure out which it is thoght fairly easily head gaskets are very obvious as you get oil in the water or worst water in the oil. Any of the others a good mechanic can figure out.

The best way to find out would be to do a cylinder leakdown test to find out where the pressure is going, in the crank case, intake, or exhaust.

Suggested Repair
Perform a cylinder leakdown test on cylinders 4 and 6 to determine where compression is escaping (crankcase, intake, or exhaust). Possible causes include worn rings, scored cylinder walls, a bad head gasket, or leaky valves. Check for oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil, which would indicate a head gasket problem.
Conversation Summary
The owner of a 1994 Ford Probe reported an electronic diagnosis showing cylinders 4 and 6 at only 55% compression and asked what could cause the loss. Experts said possible causes include bad rings, scored cylinder walls, a bad head gasket, or leaky valves, and recommended a cylinder leakdown test to locate where the pressure is going. A head gasket issue may be indicated by oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil.
