Distributor Problems

I have a '68 Ford Mustand coup with a 302 and unk milage. I rebuilt the engine and have everything back together except for the distributor. I can't get it to go back in all the way. When I set it down there is about a eigth of an inch to go before I can get the keeper bolt in place. I think that it is the oil pump drive rod that is not lining up correctly. Its a hexagonal shaft that fits into the female portion at the end of the distributor. I'm pretty sure that the gears with the cam are lining up correctly. I'm frustrated because its such a small part that so important.

Question; is this the original dist, oil pump, and oil pump drive shaft? If it's a replacement shaft check its' length against the original. Also if replacememt oil pump is the female part of the drive socket cut deep enough? Are the sockets in the dist. And oil pump clean, also is the o-ring on the dist. Too big and not letting it go in. Usually when the dist. Was that close rotating the engine would allow it to line up and drop right in; go back and recheck proper timing of dist. Alignment after rotating.
