How to fix the timing

Hi have a motor that just keeps on backfiring out of the carb and exchaust so im going to try to cheack hte timing and I have no idea how to do thi. Its ran off a distributer does any one no how to do this.

First of all to help you better I need to know what car or truck you have and I need to know what motor you have. Without that I would be guessing (NOS) 8)

Hi it is a ford continetal 839 motor it is a large lawn mower engine but a small car engine. It is a 4cyl 8v and it is run off a distributer.
