how to fix the timing

hi have a motor that just keeps on backfiring out of the carb and exchaust so im going to try to cheack hte timing and i have no idea how to do thi. its ran off a distributer does any one no how to do this.

first of all to help you better i need to know what car or truck you have and i need to know what motor you have. without that i would be guessing (NOS) 8)

Hi it is a ford continetal 839 motor it is a large lawn mower engine but a small car engine. it is a 4cyl 8v and it is run off a distributer.
