Interior problem
1982 Other Ford Models Two Wheel Drive Automatic 10000 miles

My Econoline Van Conversion has the twin rear doors but the locking knob is missing. The black plastic rod you lift to unlock from inside. I unlock the door with the key but when I press the outside release button it doesn't unlock the level catch assembly

There is a hole where the locking pin would have been placed but the rod has been moved (presumably to stopm the door being opened accidentally?)

I can't remover the inside panel as the conversion bathroom wall is against 1/3 of it so I can't get at the holding screws on that side.

Is there some "trick" to this.A catch somewhere inside the door I can lift with a wire through that hole?

That hole is the only place to access the latch assembly to unlock it. The knob was most likely removed so the door couldnt be broken into quite as easy. The rod inside the door has most likely fallen down, so you will have to remove the panel to get the access to fix it.

As I said I can not get access to the inside of the door as the panel is half covered with an inside wall.

There never was a rod in the hole. It AND the knob were missing.

The key does UNLOCK the door from the ourside but pushing the latch button under the outside handle does not unlatch the door.

The passenger side door at the rear has the door latch/lock

The driver side door latches with a small clip at the botton ONLY acessible when the passenger side door is open

The passenger side door latches onto the frame at the top....not over the "pin" on the other door...see the picture

The key unlocks the lock but I can not get the mechanism that locks the passenger side door to unlatch with the button.

You will see from the general view that only 1/3 of the inside panel is accessible.

there is no "unlock pin" assembly and never has been. The door used to de-latch when the button was pressed after unlocking with the key

Nope. The door latch button does nothing. The key seems to unlock. There a slight resistance and a click, but pressing the button does nothing at all. There's never been any way to open the door from inside. No handles. Nothing.

The drivers side rear door only opened from the outside after the passenger side door was open.A small latch on the edge of the door locked and unlocked that

The passenger side door opened from the outside only by unlocking with the key and pressing the latch button.

Now the latch button does nothing. The latch bar at the top (can't get at the bottom one for the shower base)is solid.I have tried to disconnect the latch catch from the body but the door will still not open and the mechanism remains locked at the bottom

Im not aware of any trick to getting at the bottom latch, door latch/lock issues are repaired from inside after the door panel is off.I understand there is interior in your way, but it may have to be removed to get the access you need to find out what is wrong.

The door is open.I bent a bit of 3/32 gas welding wire poked it down the hole where the "locking button" would be, fiddled - poking and lifting for 5 mins. Heard a click and went out, pushed the latch and the door opened

Sure pleased I didn't have experts of this calibre when I was engineer of a nuke sub !

Keep the $10. With skills like this he needs the money

It is certainly easier to see what you are doing than describe it on a 30 year old vehicle.I apologize for not living up to your expectations, or knowing righ toff hand how to pick a latch on a vehicle without seeing what Im going after. Thanks for using 2Carpros. Com
