I have a 1966 mustang with a c4 auto transmission that I got from a salvage yard. It shifts into reverse and from first to second but not into third. Does anybody have an idea of what might be going on??

Thanks,
Tim

Suggested Repair

Start by checking the vacuum modulator and transmission fluid flow, which the expert identified as the likely cause of no third-gear shift. The owner already confirmed this is a 3-speed C4 with an 11-bolt pan, not a 2-speed unit.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1966 Ford Mustang with a salvage-yard C4 automatic said it shifts into reverse and from first to second but will not shift into third. An expert said the problem has to be fluid flow and recommended starting with the modulator, while also asking whether the transmission was a 3-speed. The owner confirmed from a Ford reference that it is a 3-speed C4 with an 11-bolt pan, not the 2-speed FM2 with a 14-bolt pan.
