I am starting to work on a 1968 Galaxie. The car has sat for years. It wouldn't turn over until I ran the shift lever back and forth several times. I got it to turn over about 5 times while checking compression with no plugs. Then it quit again. Battery is good I changed the starter solenoid to no avail. How do I check the starter itself directly?

Before you start ripping a starter out, if this is an automatic, check the nuetral safety switch to see if it is allowing the power to go through it. A mechanic would know how to test this.
