Oil consumption on daughter's car is high - no leaks, no significant smoke (including after overrun). One spark plug badly fouled (see picture). Is there an easy way(s) to tell if it is a valve guide .v. rings? Head replacement may be worth the money but whole engine - hmmm?

Oil has probably plugged the cat-converter - which is being fixed now.

Hi there,

For that amount of deposits to build up you would be looking at a ring problem, a leak down test will help determine the blow by and a wet comp test the general condition of the rings, fitting a head will only cause more oil consumption problems, I would be looking at a second hand or re co engine.
