Having problems eliminating what might be wrong with the truck. Stick shift, v8 has a 390 engine. I believe that the slternator was going out and therefore replace the alternator. When unplugging the battery the truck automatically turns off regularly if I unplug a battery the car does not turn off, I am unfamiliar with the older models need help eliminating what I might have to replace or what else to look for in order to replace. I dont want to drive it long distance because if the battery dies then will need to be towed. What other parts should look at in order to make sure they are running well.

Before you start the truck get a voltmeter read the battery voltage-record it, now start the truck up is the voltage between 13.5 and 15.5 volts if not disconnect the wire connector at the voltage regulator and jumper A to F look at the meter did the voltage increase if so the regulator is bad, if not its the alternator.

What you doing here when jumping the A to F is you're full fielding-by bypassing the regulator to make the alternator throw out everything its got.

Good Luck I hope it helps, this is how you check the first on race day vehicles.

The truck will run without the alternator but as soon as it drains out, it goes kaput-no more nothing.

Okay next step is to get a jumper wire hook it up at the coil positive terminal and the other end to the battery positive post. Now start it up-then disconnect the cable-if it continues to run test out the ignition switch. What your doing is hot wiring the ignition system taking out the use of the ignition switch
