We have replaced 3 starters in 3 years, and 2 alternators and a battery. Truck won't start again, mechanic says we need a new starter, and a tuneup. There must be something wrong to need a 4th started in 3 years?

What is it doing or not doing? No crank? Crank no start? Or just a click?

Driver not here, but he said it made a whirring noise, all electric windows, etc worked. Guy who towed thought it was fuel pump, but apparently that has been ruled out. (A previous time we had the problem it was just a click. Another time it just wouldn't turn over.A year ago, 2 years ago, etc.)

OK, this sounds like the bendix drive of the starter, this is the gear and spring at the top of it, it is MUCH cheaper to replace this part than the entire starter, also there is a Ford technical service bulletin for starter terminal fatigue, I will email it to you, this may help with the no crank condition. You might consider also that remanufactured starters which all aftermarkets are, are just not as good as factory installed new starters, but if the owner can find a heavy duty truck unit, he may be ahead of the game.
