I have a 1997 F -150 pickup and when I put oil in it it does not show up on my dip stick. I took it to a garage and the guy told me that I needed a new engine. But my friend said that I need a new oil pump. There is no smoke, no knocking, no noises, and no leaks. What can I do to find the truth. And what do you think it is.

Thanks
Kerrbee.

How much oil have you put in? Any oil you put in to the filler runs down to the oil pan. The dipstick goes down to the oil pan. If there is enough oil in there it HAS to show on the dipstick. Are you sure it's not just clear oil. Let me know?

Even if your oil pump is not working. 6 quarts of oil would show on the dipstick. The dipstick is a long measure that goes down into the oil pan which holds the oil. The pump does not come into it. The only way you do not get a reading on the dipstick is when there is NO/VERY LITTLE oil in the engine (oil pan). When you fill up the oil at the filler cap. It then all drains down to the bottom . The dipstick sits in this oil. Hence the oil on the dipstick when you pull it out?. If you put 6 quarts in then it should definately be showing near max on dipstick. Did you drain any out first?
