i drive a 1993 ford f-150 with a four speed automatic. It has the 5.0 v-8 I have not had any mechanical problems at all with this truck. I obtained the truck from an elderly gentleman who did not drive it very much. The truck only has 82000 miles on it. This past week i was driving around town and when i took off from a stop light the truck shifted really hard and allmost threw me on the floor board. since then I have noticed hard shifting at low speeds and somtimes when taking off from a dead stop it shifts so hard that it seems like the transmission is going to fall out. This truck is an everyday driver and it has been taken care of. what is causing the shifting problem? I have a friend who told me that every 1993 ford f-150 needs to have the transmission rebuilt at around 80000 miles is this true?

I think your problem may be the vacuum modulator. Check the vaccum line and if it had transmission fluid in it, it needs to be replaced also replace the vacuum line. No Ford trannys don't need to be rebuilt at 80K IF they have been serviced. Good luck

Suggested Repair

Check the transmission vacuum modulator and its vacuum line. If the line contains transmission fluid, replace both the vacuum modulator and the vacuum line. A rebuild is not automatically required at about 80,000 miles if the transmission has been serviced.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1993 Ford F-150 with a 5.0 V8 and four-speed automatic reported sudden hard shifts from a stop and at low speeds, despite only 82,000 miles and no prior mechanical problems. They also asked whether every 1993 F-150 transmission needs a rebuild around 80,000 miles. The expert suggested a faulty vacuum modulator, advised checking the vacuum line for transmission fluid, and recommended replacing the modulator and line if fluid is present. The expert said Ford transmissions do not need rebuilding at 80,000 miles if they have been serviced.
