1977 Ford F-150 Engine does not run except with ignition on

The engine will only run with the ignition switch turned to start. Once the engine fires and the ignition key is released to the run position, the engine dies.

Either the ignition circuit from the ignition switch is open or the ignition switch is defective.

Hi there,

Also check that the ballast resistor is not burnt out, this can also give these symptoms.

Thanks for the information. Due to the age of the vehicle I cleaned the terminal ends of the wiring as well as the terminal posts on the coil, the distributor rotor and distributor cap terminals. Used a small file. Engine starts and runs like a charm. Did no have to replace any components.
