I was recently told that one rear tire is just starting to show some dry rot. Then I was told this SUV( Ford Explorer 2001/4 wheel drive) has a portion of the 4 wheel drive on all the time even when I have it switched off, and you really shouldn't replace just one tire or even 2. I was told all four should be replaced to keep the computer working correctly on all four wheels. These tires are not worn out. I have heard about replacing 2 tires at a time on other cars, but is this really correct or necessary to replace all 4 tires because of just this one? It is on the rear of the SUV. I was told a set of 4 Goodyear Wranglers would run about $900.00 installed. Is that figure in the ball park?

Your info. About my tires was what I believed to be true. I have gone to this shop and tech for many years. I have always found their work to be honest and first rate.
I also thought my Ford Explorer was just a 2 wheel drive when the 4 wheel was switched off. It is reaslly difficult to imagine why he told me this about my tire and it was necessary to replace all four. He has impressed me over the years that he really is a master tech himself. The only two ideas I can come up with is he was thinking of my wife's 2000 Old's Bravada which has all wheel drive on all the time and maybe he got hers mixed up with my Explorer. Would his information have been correct if he was thinking of her Bravada? He knows I have more car sense than many people. Then again, now I have to wonder if he tried to slip something past me and have me buy 4 $900.00 Goodyear Wranglers. Thank you for your insight.
