I have a 2003 Ford Explorer with a little issue. I have noticed that the heat is intermitant. I noramlly blows hot air as the car is driving, every now and again the heat will get cold and the temp gauge will rise, then fall then the heat will come back. Not really sure whats going on, check the fuild levels and everything seems OK with just a little topping off. I do get the smell of radiator fuild once the car is off and I walk outside the vehicle

What you described sounds like it is low on coolant. However, if you say it's full then I need you to check something. When the heat stops and the temp goes up, leave the engine running with the heater on high and feel both heater hoses. Both should be hot. Let me know what you find.
