Hello I have a 2002 sport trac 4x4 6 cyl. Sunce the weather has gotten cold it wont start without a jump. But turns over fine without one just wont fire. Checked for spark and have one. Runs fine once started and warm also starts up immediatly when warm. Not showing codes. Dealership said fuel pump was bad. I paid for them to diagnose it. But that just doesnt make sense to me. Why would giving it more power help it to start when cold? How does that effect the pump? I just dont want to replace it if it isnt bad $$$$ could it be a temp sensor? Ive just never had a pump act like this if it is the pump usually they just go bad and dont work. It has stumbled and died when it has tried to start with its own batt. But when more power is applied vroom. PS. Batt is good tested and new. Thank you for your help.

You are right. IT could be the temp sensor. What I recommend is checking fuel pump pressure when the engine is cold. Here is a how to so you can check it yourself.

https://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_to_check_fuel_pressure.htm

All you need is the gauge to check it and most parts stores will lend or rent you one. Check it yourself and then you'll know for sure.

Let me know if you have questions.

Sometimes when I go to start it I can hear the pump kick on and sometimes not. But this vhicle doesnt have a shrader valve. But I was wondering if the temp sensor was bad could it be sending a message to the pump so it doesnt work. Therefore no pressure. What do you think?
