Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 97000k miles

I have noticed that when I drive uphill my engine misfires. My engine (according to my mechanic) has one cylinder (#5) that is misfiring. I have had all spark plugs replaced and #5 is the only one corroded. It has also been suggested that I replace the head gasket. Is this a common problem?

No, this isn't a common problem. Why have they recommended a head gasket? Have they checked compression and determined it is low in that cylender? Are you getting spark to that plug?
