Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage to the smaller wire at the starter. It should have 12+ volts. If it does, chances are the starter is bad. These guides can help us fix it

Please run down these guides and report back.

hello. my car would not start the other morning so i removed the battery and took it to be tested. battery is good. i cleaned the terminals and put the battery back in. still just getting a single click when i turn the key. tried bridging the posts on the solenoid with a screwdriver and still just the one click. could it be the actual battery cables? or the starter? or something else? thanks for any answers.

Hello
Thanks for the donation

How are the headlights, radio..etc..?

You say you jumpered the starter solenoid and it still clicked only once. I would suggest removing the starter and having it tested. Suspect faulty starter. It may be possible to have starter rebuilt rather than buying a new starter if you choose to do so.

Normally when the battery is at fault it will cause a rapid clicking noise from the starter solenoid rather than just one click. However since you state the cables are in poor shape it may be that the connection at the starter is poor causing the starter not to work properly. Go ahead and replace the cables. It is a cheap and effective solution if it does work. If it is not the problem you can remove the starter and most part stores will test the starter free of charge for you.

I replaced the ignition relay and it clicks when I turn the key, however, the starter won't turn over. I'm considering pulling and taking it for testing. It worked fine until I had the idler and tension pulleys replaced. Any thoughts as to what else might be?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello,

Did you replace the Ignition Relay or the Starter Relay?

If replace ignition relay and you get a clicking under hood in area of battery then I would replace the Starter Relay here is a pic of what to look for...

What would be the next thing to check?

Try jump starting it. If it will start then most likely its your battery and you should take it by your local parts store and have them test it.

Did that. I've checked all the fuses, metered the correct voltage at the coil pack, and all cables are intact.

I'm putting it up on jack stands now and will pull the starter to have it tested. Does this seem prudent or should I just have to towed to a shop. Just trying to save some money.

Thanks again.

Ok, if the relay is clicking the try this....

Jump the 2 big terminals using a screwdriver, if the engine turns over then you may have gotten a defective relay.

The 2 Large terminals on the relay by the battery.

With the relay clicking it's an indication the there is either not enough power getting throught it, A bad Relay or bad cable.

it wont start when i turn the ignition. it clicks like its a dead battery but i took the battery in to get it checked and its fine. plus when it first started doing this i had been driving all day and i was at the store. so i asked a person for a jump and it still didn't start. when i went to the auto store and explained the problem i was having to them they suggested that it may be the starter. now i have a leak coming out to the power steering pump, and its dripping directly onto the starter and all the connections on the starter. they are all tightly connected to the starter. but could this be the problem. also the click i hear when i try to start it, isn't coming from the starter. its coming from the side wall right next to the battery. there is a fuse box and the starter solenoid, and this is where the clicking noise is coming from both the fuse box and solenoid. please help answer the question i feel its something stupid and simple. but beyond my knowledge.

There's three things that commonly happen with Ford starter systems. First check the connections on that starter relay near the battery. The large copper nuts often work loose. Next, measure the voltage on the large cable right at the starter while a helper turns the ignition switch to "crank". If it goes real low, suspect corroded strands of wire under the insulation where you can't see it, right at that end. Third, oil or power steering fluid that gets inside the starter will deteriorate the brushes and make them crumble. If that is the case, the voltage on the large cable will still be there but the motor won't spin.

I pulled the starter assembly off and took it to be tested. It tested okay. Perplexed, I cleaned it up and re-installed it. When I pulled if off, I noticed that the small wire in the bundle that attached to the solenoid was not connected. When I re-installed it, I connected that small wire (it was on a spade terminal), and it started right up.

Thanks for your help.

Good morning.

What is the battery voltage?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-battery-load-test

This could be either dirty battery cables or a bad starter if the battery checks out.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/everything-goes-dead-when-engine-is-cranked

Can you upload a video of the noise when you try to start?

Started a month ago problem persisted so we replace the battery. Ran foe several weeks ust fine but now its doing it again. What is is doing is:
Sometimes you get in and turn the key and nothing happens. Other times it starts just fine. Yesterday it finally came to a head. It would not start so friend jumped the vehicle and we drove it to their house.
Car would not start after that, not even with a jump.
Replaced solenoid next to the battery, did nothing. That alternator guage inside the car show positive like it should, when the car is running.

Hi
I need you to test something. If the starter isn't working, have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for 12 volts at the smaller wire at the starter. Let me know what you find. This will tell me if the starter is the problem or we need to go to the relay. Also, make sure the ground wire to the engine block is tight and clean.

Real common problem is corroded battery cables but you have to look under the insulation near the ends. The next step is to measure the voltages at various places while the solenoid is activated, either with a helper turning the ignition switch or you can run a jumper from the battery positive to the small terminal on the solenoid.

yesterday, I stopped to get gas and left the radio on for my kids. When I finished with the gas, I went to start the truck and I just hear one "click". Keep trying and that's all I get, the one "click". I towed it back home and still the same, "click". So I get up this morning and get ready to start pulling the battery, starter, alternator, etc to have them checked. I think I'll try starting it again, and what do you know, it starts right up like nothing was ever wrong. I've only had the truck for a few weeks but it's run fine other than eating up the gas. So, what do you think is the cause? Now I'm worried to drive anywhere in fear that it might not start once I get somewhere. Thanks.

Load test the battery and make sure its cleaned and tight both ends of cables. Could also be a problem with the start circuit-ignition switch, starter relay, starter and back lamp switch, and starter itself.

hello, well first make sure the battery connections r nice n tight.then check the ignition relay solenoid or also called starter relay.its close to your battery and one of your battery cables go connected to it u cant miss it,its brown round and has two battery size cables connected and one thin wire on the bottom.to chek it just put the ignition key in on position and leave it like that.now with a screw driver make contact on the 2 big wires wich is power and negative.not the small one dont touch that one .with the screw driver just touch one of the wires or screws and at same time contact the other and it will make ur engine turn.with key in on position if the engine fires up and starts then u will need to buy a new solenoid.if not chek ur starter .hope it works out for u. by the way always have ur parking brakes on for safety.

check starter
Ensure battery is fully charged and in good condition. Ensure battery cables and connections are in good condition. Measure voltage at starter solenoid battery cable terminal. If voltage is less than 12 volts, recheck battery cables and connections.
Service as necessary.
Connect one lead of remote starter switch to starter solenoid battery cable terminal. Connect other lead to "S" terminal on starter solenoid

I would start by making sure the battery terminals are clean and tight. Also, make sure the ground that goes from the battery to the engine block is clean and tight. Finally, have you had the battery checked? If everything I mentioned above looks good, remove the battery and have it load tested at a parts store. Most will do it for free. If it is good, let me know and I will explaine how to check the starter.

Let me know what you find.

Engine Mechanical problem
1991 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

I just got a 91 Explorer Sport 4x4 5speed 4.0L from my brother today. When he bought the vechicle someone put a bronco II transmission/flywheel/clutch assembly in the vehicle. He was having starter problems with the teeth lining up. He went and put a new flywheel/clutch assembly, a rebuilt Explorer trans. new driveshaft, new clutch master cylinder, new correct starter (correct by the parts store) and had a trans. shop do all of this work. Everything was great and all of a sudden the starter started to grind when trying to start the suv. He replaced the starter 3 times and they all seemed to work great for about 2-3 weeks and then it would start to grind again.

My question is, I now have the suv and do not want to keep sinking money into starters every few weeks. Does anyone know what could be wrong with this explorer? I have not taken the time to check the starter or flywheel yet because it is raining outside.

Thanks!
