I have a 1998 escort and am trying to change rear brakes but can not get them off. Is there a secret way?

Rear brake pads or rear brake shoes? If it is the brake shoes and you wanted to remove the brake drums, there are 2 screws on the front of the drums. To remove the screws, you need to buy the impact screw driver ($8.00). You hit the impact screw driver with a hammer which in turns loosen the screws. Then, there is another small hole with a thread on the front of the brake drum. Use the correct bolt and screw it to this hole which in turns seperates/pushes away the drum to the brake housing.

If you have 4 wheel disc brakes, you do not have brake drums.

Drums need brake shoes to be backed off the answer is for the obvious problem anyone can see and you don't need an impact diver just a bit in a ratchet.
