Headlight Problem

I have a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2 mileage around 150,000. The headlights quit working... the only way I can get the headlights (and tail lights and parking lights) to work at all is to manually hold the switch back as if I were temporarily using my high beams. What would cause this and how would I fix it?
