Every time I take my foot off of the accelerator a thumping type sound comes out from the engine area. The same sound is heard, only much louder when the clutch pedal is pushed down. Any idea on what this might be? Thanks.

Could be several things but I would start with the motor mounts. Check them all. Have someone in the car and with the hood open step through what you describe and watch the engine movement. It should not be excessive as the engine accelerates and returns to idel.

If it is not the motor mounts, whatelse do you suggest we check?

Suggested Repair

Inspect all motor mounts first. With the hood open, have a helper release the accelerator and press the clutch while watching engine movement; excessive movement as it returns to idle indicates worn mounts.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2 reports a thumping sound from the engine area when lifting off the accelerator, becoming much louder when the clutch pedal is pressed. The expert recommends starting by checking all motor mounts and watching for excessive engine movement during the described conditions. No further checks were suggested after the owner asked what else to inspect.
