'93 Escort problem getting out of 1st gear

When the car is first started up the automatic transmission will not shift into 2nd gear unless I really get on the accelerator. Once it shifts, everything is fine all day long, untill I turn off the engine and restart it. Then I have to go thru the whole thing again. Anyone have any ideas?

Anytime you have problems with an automatice transmission, the first thing to do is always check the fluid level. Since the fluid not only lubricates the moving parts, but actually performs the work through hydrolics.
