Timing belt marks and replacement?

Ive been reading all different mileages for when to change a timing belt on a 99 escort se with a sohc 2000 what is the correct mileage ive read 60,000, 70,000 and 120,000. I recently purcahased the car with 92,000 miles and the owners bought it from someone else and doesnt know if belt was ever changed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks dave

Sounds like a bunch of guesses to me..Ford does not actually list a specified mileage interval for replacing the timing belt. Ford does, however, insist having it inspected every 120,000 miles. Honestly though, I would replace it every 100,000 miles to be on the safe side. Here is a guide to help you change out the timing belt

The car recently ran rough the last few hundred yards from home. The next day we could not start the car at all, it would just crank and crank and crank. I pulled a plug wire and checked for spark; there was plenty of spark. Our mechanic says it sounds like the timing belt is broken, my question: Can this car produce spark with a broken timing belt?

Hey wr,
Very possible as the crank sensor sends the signal to the pcm for engine revolutions and timing. So yes. A simple check on that motor is to remove the upper timing belt cover, have someone crank over the engine and watch the cam sprocket if it spins. You know the rest! Let us know!

You can actually see the edge of the belt on the cam pulley without removing the cover(which is actually a major operation.) I had one belt that was completely broken -- easy to see, and one that had the teeth stripped off behind the cover -- harder to see, but the cam pulley wasn't turning.

I have a 99 ford escort and it was running fine the other day and now its hard to start.I removed the timing cover because the car is spinning frelly and that happeneds when the timing belt is loose r etc. And the belt was a little loose I tighting it up and I had a mobile mechanic come out and look at it and he said the timing had jumped. And I wanna no what u think and how do u set it and its making a knocking noise he said its because of the timing is off

If you look at the sprockets that your belt rides on you'll see a notch or mark on the side edge. These should line up. That's how you get them in the right position when replacing the belt.

But. They may not line up with every turn, because of the position of the crankshaft and or the camshaft.

If the timing belt breaks, and you spin the engine after it repeatedly, will it hurt the valves and head gaskets? Do they have to be replaced? Or can you simply replace the timing belt?

Yes, you may have bent some valves, but it has nothing to do with the head gasket. Though, you may want to consider replacing the head gasket while replacing the valves.

I cannot rotate my engine 360°. With the plugs out to set the timing marks it is hitting something right before top dead center. If you rotate counter-clockwise ever go back all the way except for the same spot it hit something. I do not know what it is

It is probably the piston hitting the valves so do not force it or you will do a lot of damage. Try moving the camshafts first.

I have tried rotating the camshaft 1/4 turn for at least two revolutions of the camshaft with the crankshaft always hitting on both sides before the timing mark.

Then you likely already have valve damage. If you take the valve cover off you may be able to see which valve is staying open due to being bent.

98 ford escort zx2 120,000 miles on it with a 2.0 dohc ztec I was driving home last night going about 50-55 miles an hour and I put my car in nuetral and my car stalled and I pulled over to the side of the road and the car wouldnt fire up. It cranked but it wouldnt actually fire itself up. Some people told me it could be a timing belt or a flywheel. Or it could even be my alarm or my computer failing because I jumped a car a week befor this? What you think it would be? I made a donation on this question once already and nothing got answered so hopefully it will this time?

The battery is not dead becuase it doesnt have a problem cranking. None of the lights are dim. I gave about all the info there is to know I mean I was just driving along about 50-55 and the car died for no apperent reason. Except I didnt push the clutch in when I put it in nuetral but that wont make the car stall I dont think. When I turn the key its cranks like it wants to start but it dont fire up. I'm hoping its just a timeing belt?
