I have a 99 ford escort that turns off after a while of driving. It rattles wen it accelerating doesn't read that its over heating but it feels hot and smokes a little.

Replace thermostat and flush cooling system. Replace Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor
CKP sensor is a magnetic transducer mounted on engine block, next to crankshaft pulse wheel. By monitoring pulse wheel, the CKP sensor indicates crankshaft position and speed information to PCM.

Check belts and tensioner for rattle noise
