1997 Ford Escort Oil leak

Is it not true that if one has a leaking rear main seal, the oil will leak out even when the engine is off? I have very slow oil leak showing up right at where the oil pan is bolted to the transaxle. I've already changed the valve cover gaskest, as I had a mnor leak there. The oil dosen't appear to trail down the side of the flywheel housing, so I don't think it's the head gasket.

Well as you drive and the oil gets warm and thin, if the seal is faulty it will leak and accumulate in the bellhousing and when you park it has no where to go but down. Hope this answers your question.
