1998 Ford Contour transmission will not engage

The trans will not engage any gear. Shifter appears to be completley loose, I have confirmed the cable are not broken. Pressing the clutch does not change a thing.

is there internal linkage or trans is shot?

Yes there is internal linkage on that trans axle. If you pull the shift cover off (where cables hook to trans) Look in there there is a part that breaks if no problem there it may be a internal problem assuming you checked to make sure everything is moving at trans when shifting shifter from inside car while some one watches linkage at trans.
