1989 Ford Bronco 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I was given this bronco II the guy said if I could get it running I could have it. Ok so I replaced the gas tank because it was rusted and I replaced the fuel filter but now the fuel filter will not turn on but when I hook the pump up to the battery it turns on right away but then I hooked it back up in the gas tank and it will not turn on do I need to pressurize the system and if so HOW? Or what else can I try to get the pump to work

Make sure the fuel pum intertia switch, fuel pump fuse are good and functioning.
