1985 Ford Bronco V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a friend with a 1985 ford bronco. Every time he puts it in drive it will not go, but as soon as he locks the hubs and shifts the transfercase into 4wheel drive it will go.

Either the rear differential is bad, the transfer case is bad, or there is no driveshaft on the rear. Is there any noise? Also, I am assuming this has the 4wd shifter on the floor and not the electric shift. Let me know if that is wrong. Also, check the linkage to the transfercase. It may not be moving to the right position. Thus, the transfer case is in neutral rather than 2hi.

Let me know.
