The flashing check engine light indicates the most serious of problems has been detected but we need to get the codes to figure out what's going on this guide can help us fix it.

My check engine light came on yesterday, and it was after I put gas in my car. I have no gas cap on my car. My oil change is up to date and I have had maintenance as I should.

Lets run the codes so we can see what is going on which will point us in the right direction to get the car fixed.

The place to start is by having the diagnostic fault codes read and recorded. The people at many auto parts stores will do that for you for free. When you list the exact code number(s), we can figure out how to diagnose the cause.

The check engine light came on and I then took the car in for an oil change as well as the transmission oil change. My check engine light went off. Not to long ago it came back on. I tried resetting it but it did not work. Just last night when coming home from work it went off. I am freaking out! How will I be able to get a code of the light keeps going on and off? Any suggestions? Anything would help. I am really frustrated.

Thank you for your help.

Hello,

We must first find out what the code is so we can fix it and clear the codes so the light will stay off.

Here is a guide to help us get started:

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers, Ken

Hi, my son bought this car from Ford dealer, and after two weeks of having it the engine light came on. Has no issues. Up to date on all maintenance, preformed by Ford. They have basically had this car more than my son has, they replaced the PCM. My son got it back on Wednesday, but as of Friday on his way to work the light came back on. As of phone call this morning, I was told they have the Ford engineers working on the issue and that they are asking mechanics to send specific data to them. Any idea on what could be causing this? I found previous questions and thought I would give this a try! Thank you.

What specific data are these engineers asking for and from what mechanics, their own. Were there any engine trouble codes retrieved from the first or second PCM?

This guide can help us get the codes so we can fix it.

Hi there, I bought a the listed above in great shape, regular maintenance taken care of 55,210 miles on it. I am due for an oil change, however the check engine light (yellow light shaped like an engine) is on steady (not blinking). Now that I drive the car I want to make sure I keep it up. The car is up for an oil change and the check engine light is now illuminated (steady, not flashing) coincidence or issue I should be concerned?

Many things can cause the check engine light to come on. What to do is read the codes to identify.

Thank you so much! I just found out it was due for a 54,000 mile checkup-and now that the oil is due (hit 0% life yesterday) that it may just be the default for service. I scheduled an appointment online at a Ford dealer. Since I need the oil change anyway, I will have them run diagnostics anyway. I will get any issue codes and post. Thanks for the quick response! You rock!

Glad to help. And yes, the oil life will set the light to let you know it needs changed. Let me know if you have any questions.

Take care,
Joe

Hey Joe, so are you saying that the check engine light (which almost gave me a mild heart attack) would be triggered once an oil change and/or recommended service was required?

Many of them are. Relax, if the car is still running good, I feel confident it is not anything to worry about.

Hey Joe, You were right nothing major. Had the oil changed, tires rotated and 54,000 maintenance done. The code came back that it was the EVAP control system leak and the tech believes it was the (gas cap cover). Since this is the Ford Fusion Flex Fuel hybrid it does not have a gas cap, it is a 'capless' tank. He reset it, and it did not come back on the drive home-he said if it does, take it to Ford for them to look at!
