Replace alternator today, alternator failed 2 weeks ago. Lights turn on, battery is fine. Problem bad alternator was 3 weeks ago. Now the engine won't turn over, but it cranks. Why won't it start?

Hi,

When there is a crank no start condition, it is most commonly either a fuel-related issue or an ignition-related. Here is what I need you to do:

First, see if the engine will start if you use starting fluid. If it does and then stalls, we know it is a fuel-related issue. If there is no change, then we need to check for a spark at the spark plugs.

Here is a link that explains how that is done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-for-ignition-spark

Try this and let me know the results. Additionally, let me know if there were any issues prior to replacing the alternator (other than the alternator).

Take care,

Joe

There was oil on the spark plugs and the ignition coils. Tried starting it again and it didn't start.

Hi,

The oil on the plugs and coils indicates the valve cover gasket needs to be replaced. It isn't uncommon. Were you able to try what I mentioned above?

Let me know.

Joe

Hi,

Replace the crankshaft position sensor. That is the most likely cause. It is located below the starter motor. See pic below.

Here is a link that explains in general how one is replaced:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/crankshaft-angle-sensor-replacement

Before you replace it, take a look through this link and let me know if you feel what you've experienced mirrors what is in the link:

Let me know.
