I have a 04 ram 1500 5.7L. My truck won't start unless i press the gas pedal and hold the pedal down. once I let off the gas it shuts off. the engine shakes when it runs. the check engine light tells me that the O2 sensors are not reading right I replaced those. EGR valve is fine. I cleaned the throttle body. the truck will start if I remove the O2 sensors and will idle but RPM goes up and down. The exhast smells really lean to. I can hear the fuel pump start up.

Hello –

I would suggest taking a fuel pressure check to see what the output is. You may hear it but it may not be putting out enough pressure. This sounds like you have a vacuum leak, dirty throttle bore or the IAC motor is not working but to be sure lets check out these guides to help us fix it.

Please run down these guides and report back.

There is pretty good fuel pressure I checked the spark plugs and they are black from running lean I checked all the plugs and there is no sign of a leak all are black. I was happy to use the guide and find a vacuum leak by the throttle body all fixed!

Chances are the MAF is the problem. However, I need the actual code number to be sure. If you can, send me the code.

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram with 99,000 miles with a manual transmission. It started cutting out and stalling. It would sometime be hard to start like it was not getting any gas after it stalled and sometimes would not hold an idle once it starts, but after a few minutes it would. I replaced the fuel pump and not much change. Sometimes it will start, but then it won't hold an idle. Then sometimes it won't start, like it's not getting any fuel. Sometimes it will be running fine, then when you let off the gas, it dies. It will usually start back up, but it may or may not hold an idle.

How do I change my IAC (Idle air control valve)? I belive this is the fix since my problem started all at once. My truck was starting and running fine until this morning. I was driving and pulled into a gas station to get a cold drink and when I got back in my truck it would start and only stay running if I kept my RPM's up around 1500-1800. If I take my foot off the throttle, the engine will die.
There are No codes and my Check Engine ligh is Not on.

It's bolted to the throttlebody Fairly simple...You may have a vacuum leak, get a can of spray gumout, spray the vac lines and maniflod area, when the idle changes, youve found the leak! You want the engine running and spray on the outside but do direct the stream onto the hoses, if it is a vacuum leak, the engine idle will change speed, then you have detected a leak, repair the vacuum leak and see how it runs! Any codes? Check engine light on?

My truck is now having the exact same problem. I've changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, cat converter, fuel pump, egr valve, and pcv valve.

I cant seem to find if I have a leak. This post exactly describes my truck, and i'm completely stumped. A mechanic told me to drive the truck around, while the computer resets itself to my idle's speed. But I dont see how that's possible.

It's right at the top of the engine, where the butterfly of the throttle body is, it's held on with 2 screws and looks like this!

I suspect rasmataz could use a few more details. This can be a real common problem with a REAL easy fix, . . . if the battery was recently disconnected, but you have to elaborate on other observations and the recent history.

If the battery was recently disconnected or run dead, the engine computer must relearn minimum throttle before it will know when it must be in charge of idle speed. To meet the conditions that will cause this to take place, drive at highway speed with the engine warmed up, then coast for at least seven seconds without touching the brake or gas pedals.

My truck is doing a number on me where i can start it but it will not idle. If i keep gas into it it runs strong. I had a guy tell me the fuel filter was in the tank, and it needed changed, then another guy told me i need a co2 sensor or a catalactic converter. I have no engine codes im not over heating i have no noises, my exhaust has a leak in front of the converter. Help

Chances are they are both wrong. If it runs good other than the at idle, the idle air control valve may be bad or you may have a vacuum leak. Because there is no check engine light makes it a guessing game. Start with the easy things first. Look for vacuum leaks and let me know what you find.

Joe

PS: A bad fuel filter would cause more problems under a load not an idle when the least of fuel is needed. As far as the O2 sensor, it could cause a problem. However, if the O2 sensor is the problem, it may be a result of the exhaust leak.

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

What is involved in restarting the engine after it stalls? Do you have to wait a half hour for it to cool down? Will it always restart right away or do you have time to check for spark? Have you checked for loss of fuel pressure? That is not monitored by the Engine Computer and will not set a diagnostic fault code. This sounds like you have a vacuum leak, dirty throttle bore or the IAC motor is not working but to be sure lets check out these guides to help us fix it.

Are you saying the idle speed is too low and you have to hold your foot on the accelerator pedal to keep the engine running? If that is the case, this is a real common problem caused by disconnecting the battery or running it dead. The Engine Computer lost everything in memory. Most of that will be relearned on its own except for "minimum throttle", which takes a very specific set of conditions to relearn. To meet those conditions, drive at highway speed with the engine warmed up, then coast for at least seven seconds without touching the pedals. Until that is done, the computer won't know when it must be in control of idle speed.

I purchase the truck from a University that was used to help students move. I purchased it after it has been sitting for five to six years. It fired up like a champ and drove strong however after it ran for a little bit it started stalling when it came to the idle position and would not start back up immediately (sometime it did most of the time it did not). I replaced the ignition switch and ignition coil it started up and ran all day like a champ. Problem came back after I put some fresh gas in it this time it would not start till the next day. I got it to start and dove it to the shop. I siphoned all the old gas that was sitting for those years (it was light brownish like malt liquor). After I siphoned it out I replace the fuel pump. It would crank but not fire back up. I replaced the distributor cap, rotor, and spark plugs. Would not fire back up. Note: before I purchased it I was told the camshaft sensor and O2 sensor had been replaced.
