I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid with 165000 miles on it. Lately the check engine light has come on and stayed on. After driving it for about 20 minutes at a speed of 45 or higher, when I slow down below 30mph the engine gives a bit of "jolt" and I can no longer accelerate over 35-45 miles per hour without the engine's RPM's revving well over what they should. It's almost as if it gets stuck in a lower gear and won't switch gears after that. If I turn the car off and restart it, it goes back to normal until I again have to slow down to under 30mph. Any suggestions as to what this may be?

IT sounds like the vehicle speed senso (VSS). IF the light comes on, that means there is a code stored in the computer that will identify the problem. IF you take the car to a nationally recognized parts store, most will scan it for free, so there is no money out of pocket for you. Have that done and let me know what you find.
