My dad gave me his old pickup a year ago. It started having this problem shortly after I got it. When the truck is cold it starts and runs fine. However, after driving about 10 miles, it starts hesitating and clunking, and the tachometer starts going crazy. It eventually will quit running, especially when I get to a stop light. It will crank and crank, but not start. After letting the truck cool down, it will start up again and work fine, but the problem will repeat itself after 10 or 15 miles.

There's a catch. There is an O/D Off button on the dash, to control the overdrive. When the car is working, the light will turn on and off when I push the button. However, when the truck is acting up, the light will not turn on and off when I push the button. As soon as the O/D light starts working, the truck will start right up.

Last week it started doing something new. Instead of the switch just not working, when I turn the ignition to on the light came on for just a moment and then turned off, and when the light came on there was a "click" by the battery in the engine compartment. But it still did not start.

I've had the fuel pressure checked and it is fine. I can't figure this out, please help!

More than likely this is an ignition issue. I would suggest we start with the ASD relay and see if you have power coming from it.

Next, we will need to use this guide to check the relay itself.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-an-electrical-relay-and-wiring-control-circuit

If the relay is ok and you have no power coming from the relay to the injectors, then we need to find out of the PCM is grounding the relay to close it.

I am attaching the writing diagram below that will help with this.

Please run through this info and let me know what questions you have.

Thanks
