My trunk hatch isn't working. When I pull the handle, it doesn't connect and so it doesn't open. The locksmith got the lock unlocking and locking the door, but the latch still doesn't seem to be grabbing onto the catch to release the door. So I can't get the hatch to open.

What's the cheapest way to fix it?

Remove the rear door panel. Either you have a broken handle or the linkage has come disconnected.

Let me know what you find.

Sure, I'll check it out. Any advice on removing the rear door panel correctly?

There are screws along the top and bottom that will need removed. Check along the sides too. After that, there are plastic clips between the door and the panel that will pop off to remove the panel.

There is a special tool that is made to prevent the plastic clips from breaking. However, just be careful and they should come off for you.

Let me know if you run into trouble. It will be a little more difficult with the door closed, but it can be done.
