Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Dodge Caravan 6 cyl 176000 miles

Hello. I have a 96 Caravan with 175,000 miles on it. When I am driving it will just stall with no warning. No lights go on prior to or after it stalls. Also, while I am driving, the van will jerk. The stallings happens four to five times on a daily basis. I was informed to add a fuel additive, get an oil change, have the air filter replaced and have my fuel injection system cleaned. I have done all of those things and it continues to be a problem. Do you know what else it could be? Also, would it be worth fixing or just buy another car? Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. It does start back up usually on the first try, other times it take 3-5 tries before it gets going again. I will drive it a little while, then it stalls again. I'm just afraid it is going to stall and we are going to get in an accident.

Get the fuel pressure checked also when was last tune? Air, fuel filters plugs and wires all these will cause stalling.

Thanks again for the information. I was informed when I purchased the vehicle it was done 6 months prior to the purchase, which would be now 1 year and a half ago. I asked for papers for all of service provided on the vehicle. Paperwork was provided however, now looking through it all again I do not see any that included a tuneup. I will give the mechanic a call. If I do all of this and it still doesn't resolve the problem, is there anything else that I should be having looked at? Thanks again for all of your help.

Hello. I took it to Goodyear. No problem codes were to be found. They stated they had no clue as to what it could be. They replaced the fuel filter and checked the pressure and delivery rate. Those checked out fine. They did state that when they took the old filter out, there was a lot of gunk in it and said that could of been the problem. $300 later I drove it home. It has stalled about 4 times since I left there. I did finally get a check engine light that came on. I did have a diagnostic done and it came up with PO106 (Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit Range). Today, the check engine light is off again but it is still stalling. Do you know what that code means in english and is it a small or big fix/worth taking it back in? Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The code may be being set due to faulty EGR valve operation. The EGR may be operating and pass inspection. But the internal passages can carbon up and if the valve stays open engine will die at idle. Have EGR cleaned and passages in the intake also.
Hope this helps
