I read your post and was suprised to see only 14,000 miles on an 88 K car.
If it did this all of a sudden like, and had no other symptoms that you noticed, the car has excellent dashboard diagnostics. The 'check engine' light flashes. A short flash, a pause and another flash and pause would be an 11.
Key on, off, on, off, on. All within 5 seconds and count the flashing light.
Best place to start, since so many items could cause this, and 87 and 88 had map sensor problems. It would cause a start and quick stall. There is plenty of information about the different sensors and even a video series also. When you find the codes a 55 ends the diagnostics, you can do it as many times as the battery and computer allows, good luck. Very good car.
