I would first clean and tighten the battery cable connections. Also check the cable to see if it is corroded anywhere.

Help I have a grand am that saturday the battery and the abs lights came on. Took it and have it tested. Showed no codes, but the altanator and battery was weak. So I changed the altanator. Drove it sunday an hour and back home. Well monday it would not start. It cranks like it wants to but doesnt turn over. I changed the battery and now have changed one of the coil paks that tested bad. And still it is doing the same thing.
What else is there to do?

If you can get it to an autoparts store, then have the charging system tested, battery, alt. And drain test.

If you have an inductive timing light, put pickup around each wire and pull trigger, if you notice any difference in flash pattern from coil to coil, then coil is bad or connections to it.

Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cyl Automatic

To avoid a wreck, locked up the brakes. Car then died and now will not crank. Ran perfect before slamming the brakes.

Have no blinking or flashing Passlock light so the 10 minute trick doesn't work. Is getting NO fuel. Acts like the Passlock cut the fuel because it thought the car was in a wreck. Will start if you give it fuel but then dies. Have tried key in ACC and with the key in the On position but light never goes off. Have tried resetting the computer at the fuse panel but pushing the button twice. Have tried leaving the key on and unlocking the driver's door 3 times. Have tried key on and pressing the gas 3 times. Have run codes and get none back. Everything I read says there is no fuel reset. Suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

I have been having problems with my 2000 Grand Am now for a while. The problem is that sometimes it will crank, and sometimes it will not, right away. Usually it will, after about 6 times trying. But has always cranked. So far. I never know when it will or not. I took it to a mechanic and was told it was a ( cannot remember), anyway. They replaced it, and I left thinking all was well. ( I do not go very often anywhere, am disabled, so didn't catch that it wasn't doing better, for a while) Out and about about 2 days later, it did it again. I took it back to the shop I had it( repaired at) and was told they didn't have the correct machine to find out what was wrong and he sent me to a FRIENDS shop who did. Who didn't do anything at all!
Recently though. I have noticed that when I turn the key to the on position, I hear a humming noise, and when I hear that noise, it cranks. If I don't then it doesn't. I have investigated and am wondering if it is something to do with my fuel pump. If that sounds like it may be the problem, is it something that can be fixed without being in the shop? (I have someone that is pretty handy if it isn't too complicated) I would appreciate any help, or info that you can give me. Feel like I have been given the run around here, somehow.
Thanks so very much!

Teresa

Hi Teresa, it sounds like you are right on track, however, you should have your friend check a couple of things first before we condemn the fuel pump. One is, check the fuel pump relay, it could be bad and be causing an intermittent open circuit, two, when you dont hear the humming that means the fuel pump is not working(you've figured that already) but. Maybe the neutral safety switch is faulty, so try messing with the shifter a little to see if you can get it to start when you have that "no humm" situation. Thirdly, scan for trouble codes, if the check engine light is on.

When you say it will not turn over do you mean the engine will not crank over at to try and start or when you turn the key to run nothing happens?

I have fixed that problem, it was a couple fuses that burnt out. Now its overheating, I just put in a new thermostat and water pump. There are no leaks, but it will overheat. I don't know what else it could be. I puit the fans direct as well.
