My car runs okay. It used to be very intermittent but now it seems often. It appears that when I turn on headlights or windshield wipers (it has daytime running lights) that the dashboard lights go on and all of a sudden, I lose fuel gauge, temperature gauge and my speedometer--by losing they go to empty, no temperature & zero on speedometer. Sometimes all the LH lights come on--Brake, Check Gauges, Theft system, Airbag and service light. On my RH side I have a continuous Check engine light, ABS and just recently an intermittent Coolant light. I have had codes scanned with dash warning lights on. Check engine light is something with catalytic converter. ABS light--I have bought 2-left Engine removal procedures right wheel speed sensors with new wiring harness and just awaiting when my mechanic friend has time to help me. A couple days before Christmas some of the LH dash lights came on and I immediately went to an auto parts store to check the codes--The person said that a "coolant sensor relay?" showed up. I did have my car overheat (stuck in traffic line) maybe 2-3 months back. At that time I let it cool and added coolant Engine removal procedures the only thing that happened was very occasionally the RH coolant light came on but disappeared quickly (I have been checking it on a regular basis)--I don't know if that incident caused the coolant sensor relay to crap out.
Either way both the sensors I listed above will be corrected ASAP. In talking with people some say it may be a short or grounding problem.I know absolutely nothing on how to check and fix. It is very cold in the mid-west, I am not allowed to do work on my car due to the lease and my friend just recently moved and I do not think he has a heater / salamander. Also, he works for a municipal street division and has been on 12 on-12 off snow removal duty. I don't like having to buy parts all the time until what car situation is taken care of along with being an elder on a fairly low fixed monthly income. I am willing to buy the coolant sensor relay if need be, as I already have bought the wheel sensors. Also many years ago I had a Datsun P/U and it had an EGR? That just counted how many times the engine had been started for servicing purposes. Back then all I had to do is pull a rubber plug out & take a paperclip and press to reset it. I am not sure if my vehicle has something like that--I've googled it without much success for info. Besides taking of battery cables to attempt to clear computer and gauge diagnostics I do not know how to clear the computer memory to go back to factory reset. I really try to stay on top of maintenance of my car to minimize other problems. I would really appreciate any advice to correct my car problems and where to start.
Thank you!

It sounds like the instrument cluster is shorting out, but we should check the ground # g129 (blk/wht) wire at the front of the transaxle. If that is okay, I would get a rebuilt cluster by searching google or eBay, here is how to change the cluster out in the images below. This video shows the job being done in a similar vehicle:

Check out the images (below). Please let us know what you find.

Well, I found out it is probably the speedometer cluster panel. It goes wacky when I turn on headlights and occasionally whenever. My ground was good. So, looking on eBay for my clusters. I get a lot of fits my car, but they end up being 3 gauges without the tachometer with mine being 4. Also, a lot show a pic of 4 gauges but the listing say without the tachometer. Anyway, I'm getting closer. On another note, GM has discontinued might as well say all parts for my car. I need a new battery tray, as mine is rusting out (difficult to find) and a driver side rocker panel molding trim for the Z24--extremely difficult. If you have any thoughts that would be good. My car is not being built for show or racing so the cheaper it can be fixed the better for me and my budget. Thanks for your insight!

No problem, yep parts for older cars are hard to come by Ebay works good for searching as well as wrecking yards like Lakenor. I think you are on the right track with the cluster.

Hi Ken, I bought a junkyard speedometer cluster panel off of eBay and should be here in a week, I guess. I have a new question. My cluster lights are still acting goofy. I had to go pick up a prescription and my ABS light on RH side came on. When I took it to an auto parts store the code had come up wheel speed sensor. I purchased the parts and my mechanic friend installed them this past Sunday. It seemed to take care of that problem, but I was wondering if it's the cluster panel or something altogether different.
Troubleshooting is a pain when one doesn't know where to start.
Anyway, I'll update you when I get the part and when it is installed. Hey, I just had another thought, there is only a 30-day warranty. Is there a way to test the panel prior to install and is it hard to refurbish the one in there now? Thank you, sir.

Not really, the cluster rebuilder is the only person that can do that. You might be able to do a CAN scan and it will show up as a trouble code. You can get a CAN scanner (Controller Area Network) from Amazon from about $32.00.

Here is a video to show you how:

Hi Ken,

Just replaced and installed the speedometer cluster panel today with major help from my mechanic friend. I think the problem is solved. I can on my headlights or windshield wiper without all the warning lights coming on and losing my speedometer and other gauges.

You called it and I thank you! I was a little frustrated in how long of time it took to get the problem taken care of, but I got by for about as cheap as possible. I don't like to see a bill from dealer or other high-end places.

Thanks, and I will keep you in mind if another hard to figure out problem arises.
Until the next major problem, lol.
