If you have already replaced the throttle position sensor (TPS), cleaned the EGR valve, and replaced the crankshaft position sensor, and the problem is still occurring, there could be a few other potential issues causing the problem.

One possibility is a problem with the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump. Another possibility is a malfunctioning idle air control (IAC) valve, which can cause erratic idle or high RPMs.

Another potential cause of the issue could be a vacuum leak, which can cause the engine to run lean and result in high RPMs. You may want to inspect the vacuum lines and check for any cracks or leaks.

Lastly, it could be an issue with the transmission, such as a slipping torque converter or a malfunctioning solenoid.

It's on the side of the block next to the oil filter.

For the 3.1L engine it is located on the lower right of engine, under exhaust manifold.

We have replaced the coils and the coil housing, we have put a new ignition moldule on, new fuel filter, and a new crankshaft sensor. Car is idling funny in park don't know what is casing this, also the other day the car would start but the minute you put it in gear it would die. So we tested it again and it said crank shaft postion fault. What would keep taking the crank shaft sensor and what else can we look for that will help the car not idle so rough in park and not die when it is in gear. Thank you

Remove and clean the IAC (idle air control) valve. When you removed the old crank sensor was there a shim installed?
Remove new sensor and make sure there is no damage to end of sensor magnet.

IAC:

Pontiac Grand AM, 1994, 205,241ml, 2.3liter. Ok one day I came home just to leave promptly when I got back in to go it would not start. It does turn over and it does start sometimes but will not run for more than a minute when I does die it does backfire most of the time. We have replaced the feul pump and filter, it does have compression and spark. We also scaned it and it said it was the crank position sensor so we replaced it cleared the code but it did not work. Can you tell me what it is and maybe a way to test it if possible, thankyou for all that you can do.

If it backfires, are you very sure about the compression? Either the timing is off, check with a timing light If timing is bad camshaft position sensor needs to go. Or if the compression isn't around 140 at all cyls, stretched or broken timing chain, Or you have a few worn lobes on the cam. The last one requies you take the pipe off the exhaust manifold! Rap on the converter a few times and see if there is anything loose inside, if the converter is clogged, you can get these symtoms too.

The car was running fine when we parked it. It wouldnt start back up. Just spin. My mechanic disconnected the gas line and the gas just trickled out. No pressure on line. He put a gauge on it and it showed 30 lbs of pressure. We installed a new pump and fuel filter. We now have 65 lbs near the engine. It still wont start. He sprayed ether into the manifold and it ran until the ether was one.I have a new crankshaft position sensor to put on it. IS this the problem or is it something else?
He put a test light on the injecters while spinning the engine over and the light stay on with out flicking

I have a 1993 Grand am SE 3.3 v6 123,000 mi I got off my buddy. He stopped driving it because he lost the water pump; it ran fine before. The car sat for about 2 years. I got it, changed the water pump and no start. Turns over and smells like fuel but not starting so I just changed the crank position sensor. It turns over fine but still no start. Coil packs? Ignition control module? Or other? How do I test packs or module?

Before you go nuts with this overheat, check the compression, ALL aluminum engines, when out of coolant, can and will warp something, a head or block. Dissable the fuel system to keep testing without washing the cylinders with GAS! Change oil and filter and put some oil in the cylinders. Then compression test it!
