Crankshaft position sensor

I'm buying a car and was told the crankshaft position sensor is out so the car rev limits at 5,000 and takes a little bit of cranks to start. Would this be what is causing it or am I being lied to?

Hello,

If the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) was out of the vehicle it wouldn't start at all. The Power-train Control Module (PCM) AKA, "computer" uses the signal generated by the CKP to determine where the engine is in its four stroke cycle. It also is used for misfire detection. I have included information from the factory on your vehicle's CKP in the diagrams down below. The rev limiter is set by your vehicle's PCM and should be adjustable via an after market tuner or tuning software, like products from SCT. I plugged in my OBD scanner and says that CKP is the problem. I have also heard it can still start, but I am making sure.
