Is it important to fix the oxygen sensor? My mechanic told me that the computer told them that it is my catalytic converter. The bmw folks first told me to drive the car around till the "check engine soon" light goes up again. Then they say it is not the catalytic converter, but the oxygen sensor. What should I do?

Who is "they"? Is the light on now? Was it on? What was it on for? If there is a fault for "catalytic converter conversion" then you should tell me that. The manufacturer is on the hook for the cat up to 8 years and 80k miles. If the fault is documented and that same fault for the cat comes up again, they need to install another one. And warranty gets to pay for it.

The "check engine soon" light is on. They = BMW folks. (Prior to taking the car to BMW, my mechanic did showed me 5-6 computer-printed messages regarding the catalytic converter messages.) I am just afraid that BMW does not want to replace the catalytic converter.

They are not in a position to deny a legit claim. Federal law compels them.
