During a recent oil change my oil filter was improperly installed. While driving home my engine light came on.
After raising the hood, the entire engine compartment was covered in oil. After returning and having the problem resolved and the engine cleaned it has a loud squeek. The shop said it is a bad tension pulley and the oil did not cause the squeek. Are they correct or can a large amount of oil on the engine cause this?

The oil got on the belt and that is what is causing the noise, have them replace the belt and see what happens.

They did. But they are saying the noise is coming from the pulley.

Then have them state in writing that the replacement of the tensioner will cure the noise.

I guess what im getting at is this. They said they would repair at no charge anything related to the bad oil change. The replacement on the pulley is $515.00. The car didn't make a single noise until this incident happened. They say it is coincidence, but I don't think it is.

I would let them replace the pulley under the condition that if it doesn't fix it, you don't pay for it.

The price they are quoting is WAY high, the tensioner lists for about 100 bucks and there is also a deflection pulley that might need replacement that lists for about 50 bucks. I am sending you a PM with a site link to see for yourself.

I don't think I should pay for it either way. I could be wrong. Is it possible that the oil on the pulley could have damaged it?

Let me be very clear about this, NO, it could not damage the pulley or the tensioner.
