Based on the symptoms, it could be a couple different problems. However, if the check engine light was on, scan the computer to determine what trouble codes are stored in the vehicle's computer. Here is a quick video showing how it is done. Also, I realize not everyone owns a scanner, but most parts stores will rent or lend them to potential customers.

If you do not have access to a scanner, we need to check for ignition spark and fuel pressure. Here is a link which describes how to check fuel pump pressure:

Again, these test require some basic equipment, but most parts stores will lend you the tools.
If you have no access to any of the parts, try this trick. See if the engine will start for a couple seconds using starting fluid. If it does, then the problem is fuel related. If it will not start with starting fluid, chances are it is ignition related.
When checking fuel pressure, the reading should be between 44 and 54 psi.
