Are you certain you have spark? Does it sound normal when cranking? Since you have no RPM signal, that is usually a good indicator that the crankshaft position sensor is bad. But you shouldn't be getting spark.

Also, if you smell gas, and you do have spark, then there is a chance a timing belt has broken, jumped time, or even a bad head gasket causing low compression. A timing belt issue will usually cause the engine to sound odd when cranking it. If you can record it cranking and upload it, I should be able to tell if that is a concern.
I strongly recommend removing the plugs and seeing if they are wet with fuel. Let me know. Also, here is a link that explains how to check for spark. In case you did something differently, try this process.
