After changing the thermostat due to overheating, the car will not start. It cranks and almost starts or does start but not sure because it starts to accelerate and sounds like the serpentine belt is slipping. I was told it could be a blow head gasket and someone else said it was the timing belt. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,

By chance, could you record it cranking and upload it for me to hear? I should be able to tell if it is a timing issue or low compression.

Also, if you haven't already, you may want to consider testing engine compression. Here is a link that explains how it's done. You will need a compression gauge, but most parts stores will lend one to you.

Here is a link that explains how to identify a head gasket issue:

Let me know. Also, the video would be very helpful.

Take care,

Sorry it took so long to reply, because my only other car broke down also. I really appreciate you answering my question. If you're sure it’s one of those 2 issues it is beyond my capabilities mechanically and financially.

Hi,

No problem whatsoever. I can't be 100% certain without doing some diagnostics as mentioned above. However, if you record it cranking and upload it for me to hear, I may be able to identify if it is a compression issue.

Let me know. Also, I hope you have a Happy Easter.

Take care and let me know if I can help in any way.
