Replaced fuel pump because would crank and start if starting fluid was sprayed into intake manifold, then immediately shut off. Changed fuel pump, crank won't start, even with starting fluid. What could it be? Checked fuses, checked battery, and checked connections. I'm lost.

Hi,

If it won't start with starting fluid, it sounds like you lost spark to the plugs. First, pay attention to see if you hear the fuel pump actuator for a second when you first turn the key on. Then, I need you to check for spark. Here is a link that shows how it's done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-an-ignition-system

If you don't hear the pump and lost spark, I need you to check a couple of fuses and the automatic shutdown relay (ASD). The ASD will shut down fuel and ignition if it fails.

I attached the entire wiring schematic below for the powertrain management circuit. I highlighted the ASD relay and the fuses. First, confirm the fuses are good and have power to them. Here is a link to help:

If they check good and have power, switch the ASD relay with a different one in the fuse box having the same part number to see if it makes a difference. If there isn't one, here is a link that explains how to test a relay.

circuit

The last pic shows the three fuses and the ASD locations in the under-hood fuse box.

Let me know the results or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

See pics below.

Note: I had to cut each of the three pages of schematics in half to make them readable for you. I did overlap them so you can follow from one to the next.

Also, you listed this as a Jeep Laredo. Laredo is a package offered on different models. Since you indicated a V8 engine, I assumed it was a grand Cherokee. If that is incorrect, let me know.
