My truck has recently started randomly shutting off while driving it will just shut off. If I wait a minute or two it will fire back up and run fine. This morning it wouldn't start. I'm a heavy equipment mechanic and this makes no sense to me at all.

Hello,

You might want to check your vehicles Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) and the connector to it. Your vehicle's Power-train Control Module (PCM) AKA, "computer" uses voltage signals from this sensor to know where each cylinder is the stroke process to know when and what cylinder to provide spark and turn on the fuel injector for. If you are getting intermittent failures of this signal your engine will act just like you described. If it finally went south on you, that would account for your no start condition. I have included the information for all engines available on your year and model truck as the engine you gave when asking your question is not available for your year truck in the diagrams below. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks,
Alex
